About Lyon Park And Lyon Village

Lyon Park

Lyon Park is a neighborhood and Historic District considered part of Clarendon-Courthouse. It was constructed between 1891 and 1951. The National Register of Historic Places cites it as “an excellent example of one of the many residential subdivisions that emerged in Arlington County after the First World War to support the burgeoning population flocking to the nation’s capital and its suburbs.”

The community was designed around its eponymous park, and features a wide variety of architectural styles, from 1920’s Craftsman-style bungalows to Colonial Revival-style buildings dating from the 1930s and ‘40s. Some of the Queen Anne-style homes built prior to the neighborhood’s establishment still stand.

Lyon Park offers two additional parks; Clay Park and Fillmore Park.

Lyon Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Lyon Village

Lyon Village is 191 acre historic district considered a sub-neighborhood of Lyon Park and, by extension, Clarendon-Courthouse. The neighborhood is less than a mile north of Clarendon, and is bordered by the Courthouse and Colonial Village neighborhoods.

Lyon Village was subdivided and developed in the 1920’s and 1930’s, offering 762 lots, each smaller than an acre in size, on tree-lined streets with sidewalks and green medians. The development was designed around a park, included traffic circles and an intricate system of curved roads. Lyon Village was extended over the next two decades with the addition of 43 acres of adjacent blocks featuring standard grid street patterns. Those interested in purchasing a home in Lyon Village can discern by the street pattern if the property lies in the original 148 acres platted by developer Frank Lyon in 1923, or the expanded section of the neighborhood.

Lyon Village homes were designed from the 1880s to late 1990s in an eclectic mix of 20th-century architectural styles, primarily scaled-down versions of Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Tudor Revival, Classical Revival and Spanish Mission Revival and American Foursquare. Some examples of Queen Anne style homes pre-date the established neighborhood, which also includes Bungalow homes popular during the 1950’s.

Today’s Lyon Village community is primarily made up of single-family homes, with apartment buildings lining its borders. You’ll find numerous retail and dining options, an elementary school, 3 middle schools, and a high school.

Lyon Village Park offers a “sprayground,” play equipment, a covered picmic area, lighted tennis courts, and a basketball court. James Hunter Park offers a plaza terrace, open lawn, demonstration gardens, a water feature and an adjacent half-acre dog park featurng on and off-leash options.

The Lyon Village Historic District is made up of 1,073 contributing buildings and 1 contributing structure.
