H STREET DEVELOPMENT - NEW CONDOS ON H STREET
H Street development jumpstarted with the construction of a new Whole Foods built on the ground floor of the Apollo building at H and 6th. Once a commercial centre filled with retail, dining establishments and entertainment venues, H Street suffered great damage during the 1968 riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King. Always transportation-oriented, revitalization on the corridor suffered from the lack of a Metro station. Finally, after fifteen years of promised development and the coming of the H Street streetcar, the area has seen a resurgence and is for the first time becoming a pedestrian-friendly district. The H Street Corridor is expected to see approximately 1500 new residential units by the end of 2018, many for-lease, but some condominium and attached homes. Next door, NoMA is rapidly changing from an old warehouse district to a major employment center with over 1,000 hotel rooms, 8,000 residential units, a new grocery store, and new restaurants and shops.
