1355-1357 U Project Details

1355-1357 U Street is a new 9 story, mixed-use project offering 23 condominiums, two parking spaces and retail on the lower level and first two floors. Residential storage, a car share parking space and bike parking are included in the design. Offered will be studio, one, two and three bedroom condo units designed as flats and multi-level floor plans. The residences will range in size from approx. 426 square feet to about 2075 square feet. 1355-1357 U is located at 14th and U Streets on the U Street Corridor.

The property evolved from two lots originally occupied by detached homes to an 1895 replacement of the 1355 home by a contemporary brick house with front bay and 2-story stable in the rear. The property remained residential until the 1950s when it converted to a restaurant with a 2 story addition joining the former house and stable. The existing brick building at 1357 replaced the original frame home before the turn of the 20th century and was used as a store. In 1925, an 18 x 60’ service garage was constructed behind it on Park Place Alley. Park Place was being developed as a community of auto repair shops, four within half a block. By 1958, a restaurant occupied the front of 1357 U Street with an auto repair and welding shop behind. The historic store fronts will be restored and retained.

Project design details: Developers demolished the rear portions of the contributing historic structures, beginning 48.55 feet north of the property line and are constructing an 85.3 foot 8-story addition behind this line. The basement, first and second floors would house retail space. There would be 23 residential units on floors three through eight. Two private and one car-share parking spaces would be provided within the ground level of the rear portion of the building and would be accessed from the rear alley. Penthouse residences will not be offered.
