Get To Know Shaw | Cardozo
History | Culture
Shaw blends its vital history and legacy as an important Black cultural center with unique commercial components and beautiful 19th Century rowhouses.
The Shaw neighborhood is an urban tapestry of sights, colors, sounds and tastes, woven into the neighborhood’s history as one of the District’s most important Black social, cultural, and economic hubs. Originally ‘Uptown,’ and known as ‘Mid-City’ until the mid-1960’s, today’s Shaw includes the Shaw Historic District and Blagden Alley Naylor Court Historic District. In the 1990’s, developers began to separate what we now know as the U Street Corridor, Logan Circle, Truxton Circle, and North Shaw from Shaw, but blurred and unofficial borders are a DC thing, so we step over them a bit here.
