Get To Know American University Park
HISTORY & CULTURE
American University Park has evolved from a 3,124 acre tract named “Friendship” to stalled subdivision and finally an upscale, family-friendly neighborhood. Congress chartered the American University in late 1892, but funding it took thirty years and it wasn’t dedicated until 1914. Most of the university’s camplus is located in today’s Spring Valley and Tenleytown neighborhoods.
The prominent Murdock family built the first house in what became a farming and milling area. Its later residential subdivision was the work of real estate investors Croissant & Stone.
American University Park architectural styles include Queen Anne, Colonial, Craftsman, and Tudor Revival.
AU Park never became a “hot” Washington DC subdivision, but today it is a desirable, upscale neighborhood with steadily rising real estate values and in-demand school pyramid.
