A Little History On The Location

This block of R Street NW straddles the boundary between Shaw and Truxton Circle. Touted as one of the best places to live in DC by rating site Niche.com, The 43-acre Truxton Circle neighborhood was built between 1918 and 1920. Truxton Circle, like Dupont Circle, was named for a traffic circle. this one (with a slight variation in spelling that is probably modern), after US Navy Commodore Thomas Truxtun. A lone police officer directed traffic at the traffic circle until a traffic light was installed in 1925. Apparently that didn’t go so well, because the Truxton traffic circle was demolished in 1947 after a long string of traffic jams and accidents.

Today, Truxton is a ‘lively enclave’ (the Washington Post’s term, not mine) comprised of late 19th-century houses and historical schools, parks a grocery stores and great restaurants within walking distance. A seasonal farmers market in neighboring Bloomingdale is popular, as are the many amenities of Shaw, including Shaw’s Tavern, The Right Proper Brewing Company, All Soul’s Bar, Howard U, the many eateries and watering holes of Florida Avenue & U Street, Shaw’s historic Howard Theatre, and more.
